How to Choose the Right School For Your Child?

Are you looking at schools for your little one? In , Canada, there are schools galore which is a blessing as well as a problem. It is a blessing because you have many options to pick from – you can shortlist the schools of your choice and fill out their application forms. However, the choice of schools can also be a problem because shortlisting schools itself can be a time-consuming task. Here are some tips you could follow to choose the right school for your child –

  1. Have clarity about your principles and values – Your principles and values can play an important role in helping you decide which school you would like your child to be in. For example, would you like him/her to be in a school which has a strong emphasis on inculcating discipline among students or a school which has relaxed rules and regulations and prioritises creativity over discipline? Based on this preference, you could choose between traditional schools which focus on formal learning or progressive schools which follow alternative methodologies of learning.
  2. Budget – Check the fees of the schools you have shortlisted and create another list with schools that fall comfortably within your budget. While creating this list, it is important to consider not just the tuition fees but the extra expenses that you will have to incur when you send your child to school. For example, is the fee all-inclusive or will there be extra costs for uniforms, extra-curricular activities, etc? Also, does the school provide bus service or will you have to drop and pick up your child from school?
  3. Infrastructure and facilities – Find out about the infrastructure and facilities of the school. For example, does the school have facilities for activities that your child is interested in such as playing soccer or theatre? Does it have clubs for extra-curricular activities? Also, if possible, check out the class schedules of the school. Is the school heavily focused on academics and devotes most classes to it or does it maintain a balance between academics and extra-curricular activities?
  4. Reviews – It is very important to check the reviews of a school before shortlisting it. The reviews will give you insights into the faculty at the school, their teaching methodologies, their infrastructure and facilities, etc. Look for reviews of schools online and also find people within your friends and family circle that send their children to the schools of your choice. Talk to them about strengths and weaknesses of the school.

Last but not least, pay a visit to the schools that you liked and check if they meet your expectations. A few things you could look at are – Were the students busy and happy? Were the teachers polite? Were the classrooms well-ventilated and equipped with the necessary equipment like a CCTV, a TV or a projector for audio-visual aids for learning? Try to tick as many things as possible in your checklist for a school because you want the best for your child.
